SAMTRA APPOINTS NEW CEO

The Board of Directors of the South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Ivan Heesom-Green as the new Chief Executive Officer of the organization, with effect from 1 October 2016. Mr Heesom-Green will succeed long standing SAMTRA CEO Mr Andy MacLennan, who retires at the end of the year.

Mr Heesom-Green has enjoyed a successful career in the maritime industry and has held numerous senior positions in Safmarine and Maersk Line. He has also served as a member of the SAMTRA Board. He brings with him a proven skill and competence set that will ensure that the high quality training standards achieved by the organization since it was established in 2003 will be maintained, and will enable the further growth of the organization into the future through innovative thinking.

Mr Heesom-Green graduated as an Accountant following his studies at the University of Cape Town, and has also completed an Executive Development Programme at Penn State College in the United States of America.

He will assume the responsibilities of CEO after a comprehensive handover period during which he will work side by side with the current incumbent, ensuring continuity of institutional knowledge.

SAMTRA Chairman Mr Fred Jacobs: “We know Ivan’s ability and the contributions he can make through our interactions with him both at SAMTRA Board meetings and through interactions in the shipping sector, and look forward to him taking SAMTRA further in its endeavours to be the pre-eminent training solutions provider in Sub Saharan Africa. We would also like to thank and acknowledge the significant contribution that Andy MacLennan has made to the organization since it was first established.”

SAMTRA, based in Simon’s Town, provides; world standard professional maritime short courses, simulator training as well as Cadet and Rating Training administration services to third parties. To achieve this, the company adheres to quality management standards, and actively participates in maritime industry skills development initiatives, providing innovative maritime education and training solutions.

SAMTRA recently acquired Seatrain Consulting, which has enabled it to further extend its footprint in the Management & Administration of Training to West African clients requiring support for trainees undergoing maritime training in South Africa.
